Sorry, Winkopps: this is getting chaotic. So many uncertainties and
possibilities ..
.. I hope the Arrival of Karl's genealogy will help cleaning up
this mess ..
.. after my holidays I will also separate this file in a German
branch and an American one.
Keep mailing data!
This is just a little start of the genealogy of this branch of the family
tree. There must be much more in my archives - which will be added later.
I received these first data from Anne-Marie
Winkopp from France as a part of the research on the roots of her great-great-grandmother
Emilie,
who possibly (is identical with an Emily Winkopp listed in the 1881 Britsish
census - follow the link - and who possibly) is from Wertheim, Baden-Württemberg.
In that area, in Külsheim (10 km S.), in Tauberbischofsheim (20 km
SE, see below) like in the Bavarian Aschaffenburg (35 km NW) the name Winkopp
was or even still is known. Interesting is that another
Winkopp daughter also left to England, and that the first names Emilie
and, though less significantly Josef and Johann, are listed here.
It is clear that the information Anne-Marie gave me is part of a more
extensive genealogy [maybe Karl's?], but I didn't
track it down so far. All a have is one sheet of paper with the (English)
header: "III. The Winkopp family in Southern Germany and USA" (all places
mentioned are in Germany unless stated differently (2-character codes indicate
a US state).
1. (G). Peter Adolf Winkopp ["see above
F 2 I", says the text I'm typing off - but all I
have is the information from here ..]Google
gives many links to this man, who was a famous writer and philosopher in
and around Frankfurt am Main, in the late Renaissance era.
Married Barbara Schmitt.
Their children:
2. (H) Adolf Winkopp, born 1802
in Aschaffenburg?, died 1865.01.17 in Karlsruhe.
2. (H) Adolf Winkopp, born 1802
in Aschaffenburg?, died 1865.01.17 in Karlsruhe as widower. Barrister-at-law
in Tauberbischofsheim.
Married 1. on 1835.03.08 in Tauberbischofsheim
Maria Magdalena (or Magdalene?) Schwab (born 1817 - died 1838, daughter
van Jakob Schwab, bakermaster and Anna Maria Haag from Wertheim/Main)
Their children:
3. Anna Felicitas Winkopp, born 1835 in Tauberbischofsheim,
died 1841 in Tauberbischofsheim.
4. Franz Jakob Adolf Winkopp, born 1836.08.18
in Tauberbischofsheim, died 1877 in New York
NY.
Married 2. on 1839.02.04 in Tauberbischofsheim
Maria Anna Elisabeth Schreck (daughter of Franz Schreck, former mayor and
Anna Doelzer from Tauberbischofsheim).
5. Anna Barbara Albertina Winkopp, born 1839.11.01
in Tauberbischofsheim, died ? in ?. Governess in England, United Kingdom.
[see
also
Emilie!]
Married 3. on 1841.04.30 in Tauberbischofsheim
Maria Susanna Schreck (sister of the 2nd vrouw, and daughter of Franz Schreck,
former mayor and Anna Doelzer from Tauberbischofsheim).
6. Franz Adolf Winkopp, born 1842 in Tauberbischofsheim,
died 1843 in Tauberbischofsheim.
7. Eduard Christian Winkopp, born 1843.09.12
in Tauberbischofsheim, died ? in Pirmasens.
Confidential clerk in a shoefactory in Pirmasens.
According to the source, his descendants still live in Pirmasens. Possibly
Willi
Winkopp is one of them; and I have found a Helmut Winkopp
there, Am Ehrenhof 12, 66954 Pirmasens, (06331) 91894 but I did try to
contact him yet.
8. Otto Phil. Jakob Winkopp, born 1844.10.07 in
Tauberbischofsheim, died ? in ?.
9. Franz Josef (Josepf?) Alfred Winkopp, born
1846.02.03 in Tauberbischofsheim, died ? in
?, USA?.
According to Karl, he lived
as barwaiter (?) in Williamsburg, ?, USA, in 1865. Later he owned a beersaloon.
[This
might well be the older Alfred!]
10. Franz Gustav Emil Winkopp, born 1847.10.05 in
Tauberbischofsheim,
died
? in ?.v
According to Karl, he lived as gardener (?) in
Frankfurt (am Main?) in 1865.
The children listed here are in exactly the same generation as the Emilie who started the French branch. Her first name appears here more frequently, and she might well be another granddaughter of Peter Adolf. See my theory about this on the 'French Winkopp' page.4. Franz Jakob Adolf Winkopp, born 1836.08.18 in Tauberbischofsheim, died 1877 in New York NY. Officer in the fire brigade in Pforzheim, emigrated to the USA, (Williamsburg, Newark). Broker and agent, counsel of orphans, In 1874? he was bank cashier in New York, NY.
X. Greatgrandfather Winkopp [might be 4. Franz Jakob Adolf Winkopp]. I think that he died in Germany. But maybe he did die in New York City, NY, USA.
Information from Otto Spengler:
Adolf Winkopp from Pforzheim. [might be Franz Jakob Adolf Winkopp from Tauberbischofsheim and later Pforzheim]
Married Emilie Scheer. [might be Emilie Anna Scheer from Pforzheim]
Their children:
a. Gustav, born 1866.12.11 - died ab. 1886 (at the age of 19) in Frankfurt/Main.
b. Alfred, born ab. 1845 (emigrated in 1861 to America at the age of 16) [might be 9. Franz Josef Alfred ..]
c. Hans Adolf, born 1869.10.20 in Pforzheim. [1896.10.02 ??? - probably 11. Hans Adolph]These informations don't seem to fit with the other data (especially Alfred's data seem incorrect; Hans Adolf's birthdate might be a typo). Which is strange, because on one hand Otto's information seems to come straight from written sources. But on the other hand the other information I have from Anne-Marie about Franz Jakob Adolf and his next of kin is so detailed, that it is hard to doubt ..
Otto's source are the Pfarrbüchern (parish books) from Külsheim: Kath. Pfarramt Külsheim, Pfarrer Joseph Roth, Kirchbergweg 20, D-97900 Külsheim, Tel. +49 - (0) 9345-226. I will try to get photocopies of the Winkopp entries.
Information from Chris Wynkoop:
"I did a quick check at ancestry.com and they claim they have one census record for a Winkopp in their database, but, once again, I don't have a subscription to their database, so I don't know if it's the family your looking for or not." Who has such a subscription to ancestry.com?All new information below comes from Aileen Jr. [the "I" I'm quoting] and her brother Jack as I destilled it from their mails. Not all is clear to me yet, but time will certainly fix that.
I think that Alfred (from whom Oscar descended) and Grandpa Adolf's father were brothers. [This confirmes the thought that the data about Alfred that I got from Otto Spengler may be incorrect]
In a letter to Grandpa dated February, 1956, Karl writes: ".. you might recall that I sent you in 1939 pictures of the grandparents Winkopp and of your mother. .. I would like to ask you to have reproductions made .. [Karl's own copies/pictures were lost in World War II] .. I would like to send .. the Winkopp Family Tree, going back as far as 1600. ...The Winkopps were a family of famous lawyers and scholars, who in former times lived in Erfurt, and previous to that time on the lower Rhein. There is also a family crest of the Winkopps."11. Hans Adolph 'Grandpa' Winkopp, born 1869-10-02 in Pforzheim? (Jack has a labeled sketch of his birthplace) - died 1960.12.05 in a nursing home somewhere in New York State, USA and was buried from the Lady's Chapel at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, NY, USA). According to Jack it is Adolph A. he seems to be mistaking and it should really be H. Adolph. Although: when really born in Pforzheim, it is almost certain his name was Hans AdolF. But since Aileen clearly confirms the spelling H. AdolPH which is the correct USA version, it is decided to use that seplling here.In my Aileen Stevenson's file, there is a copy of a photo of Emilie Winkopp 1848-1926 nee Scheer labeled by Vincent Winkopp. In a letter from Karl Ehmann to Vincent in 1956, Karl asks for family history. And, he asks for copies of photographs which he knew that Vincent's father Hans Adolph Winkopp had copies of. Karl's own were lost in World War II. Karl says: "As I want to have some photos of my Winkopp ancestors and relatives and since I know that you own some, I beg you to procure me those I once sent your father in reproductions, especially those of our dear grandmother and of our grandgrandparents(taken from a painted portray.) I remember there was one- among others- showing Grandmother as a bride in dark silken gown." This photo copy that I have may be Vincent's grandmother, Emilie?
In a letter to Vincent dated May 22, 1956, Karl writes: "(will send to Vincent) "...the most interesting history of the Winkopp family beginning with the 16th century near the Dutch border, including heraldry. Most men in the family were jurists, others mayors, history wirters etc. ..."
12. Emilie Winkopp,
born 1871.05.25 in Pforzheim-
died 1963.11.25 in Pforzheim. Until her death she lived with her son Karl.
In 1958 they were visited by Vincent, his wife Aileen
and their sons Thomas & Jack (read his story
about this visit).
Married ? Ehmann.
Their children:
12a. Karl Ehmann from Pforzheim,
born ab. 1901 (on 1956.05.22 he was 56)
12b. Hans Ehmann from Pforzheim, born ab. 1903/1904
(on 1956.05.22 he was 52)
13. Alfred (had
3 given names; was known as 'Eddie')Winkopp,
born 1875.02.06 in New York, NY, USA, died 1922 in Pforzheim? I
don't think my grandfather died in Pforzheim, but in NY. Owner
of a saloon in old Dutch town Brooklyn, after which he opened a restaurant
in Arion Hall, also in Brooklyn. He
then opened Winkopp's Hofbrauhaus in Brooklyn. [those Alfreds keep confusing
me!]

died 1979? in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA? In 1964, he lived in Fort Lauderdale,
13l. ? 13m. ? - 13n. ? - 13o.?
On http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Birth/1898/1898.W.Birth.Bklyn.html I found someone who would fit here nicely: Name: Henry Winkopp, Birth Date: 29 Sep 1898, Certificate Number: 1447413i. Walter Winkopp, born 1893 (on 1964.03.08 he was 70) in ? - died ? in ?. He was in show business and used the professional name 'Walter Windsor', but never had it legally changed.
And who is this? Is it Walter Sr.? It is possible that the Queens graduate 1909 was my father.
[all blue data above under the entries #13, #13i & #13ia come from Walter].
13k. Oscar Winkopp, born ab. 1897 (on 1964.03.08

Vincent and his wife Aileen had contact with Oscar Winkopp, due to a mistake in a department store billing in the 1950's. I have some information on this Winkopp branch. This is the branch from the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. In the 1950's they lived in the Philadelphia area and by the '80's were in Florida where my parents met them several times socially. I think that Jack or Tom has been in touch with this Oscar Winkopp branch. I will look up last known addresses of all of these folks as soon as I can. [interesting persons to research further are in bold italics].
16d. Vincent John
Booth Winkopp, born 1907.06.04 in Manhattan or Brooklyn, NY - died
1979.11.05 in Ridgewood, NJ, buried in Middletown Springs, VT. Profession?
The Winkopp Family were the owners of old Oatman Farm, Middletown Springs,
VT in 1978.
Married 1936.08.22 at St. Mary's Church in Closter,
NJ, Aileen Hermine Pelletier, born 1911.02.02 in Closter, NJ - died August
22, 1987 in Rutland, Vermont, buried in Middletown Springs, VT. Aileen
was the driving force in genealogy. She somehow discovered that my grandfather
* had left a sister in Germany when he went to New York City at age 6 *
[the
part between the * * doesn't fit with the other information
about this]. He had never mentioned her
and had no contact for more than 70 years. I was in Germany in 1958 and
came across a Phone listing for Winkopp in Pforzheim. My brother Thomas
and I knocked on the door, and after some language problems, met Peter
Winkopp [should most probably be Peter Ehmann],
son of Karl Winkopp [should probably be Karl
Ehmann] and Karl's Mother (can't remember
her name) [most probably Emilie Winkopp],
who was in her 80s [probably 87] and
told me that her brother Adolph was killed by Bismarck's people, or died
at sea. To me, the two [Emilie & Karl]
looked like twins. Karl was ecstatic. His hobby was
genealogy, and he had traced Winkopp back to the 1500s. Karl
wrote many letters to my father. My mother tried to translate them and
return his requests, always signing my dad's name.
Their children:
16da. Mary Kate Winkopp, born 1937.08.10 in Closter NJ. Married ? Morgan,
their children?
16db. Thomas Pelletier Winkopp, born 1940.05.09
- died 1961.10.08 in Middletown Springs VT, in a car crash, buried in Middletown
Springs VT.

12a. Karl Ehmann from Pforzheim
Married 1939 in ? Berte (or Berta) ?
Their child(ren):
12aa. Peter Ehmann, born ab. 1940/1941
(on 1956.05.22 he was 16).
Married 1964.08.?? in Berlin with ? (of French
nationality). They are possibly living in Pforzheim, last lived there but
in 1980 lived together in Paris, France.
On 2003.08.23 Volker Ehmann, a distant relative of Karl Ehmann, Grenzstrasse 8, 75172 Pforzheim, 00 49 - 7231- 589629 promised me to
- send me a photocopied version of the ab. 50 pages genealogy by Karl Ehmann and to
- try to find a closer relative of Karl Ehmann to find out what might have happened to Karl Ehmann's genealogical collection. In a letter to Vincent dated March 14, 1957, Karl writes: "...The Weinkauff branch is well known to me from former correspondence with an architect in Darmstadt with the name of Wienkoop. 20 years ago I got from him a similar family tree and the crest. I know for sure that this branch has its origins in Brandenburg (near Berlin) and was founded by Dutch immigrants which settled there as brickmakers. Maybe in olden times there is a link to our branch for in one quarter of the crest you find three rings on red ground. "our" crest which I sent to you there are two rings in red ground. The vines on top of the Weinkauff crest only signify the name but they don't belong to the original crest...."
In a letter to Vincent dated November 3, 1957, Karl writes: "As you know I am still interested in news referring the different branches of Winkopp-families in USA and the connections with our branch...Shall I send back the Family tree of Wienkoop-Weinkauf? I cannot see any connection with our family, and so it is of no use...Now there is a line of their wives (Winkopp) which are as interesting as the others. ...Maybe you can help to locate some of French or Belgian origine? (See Grevillons on my Winkopp-record)..."
In February, 1956, Karl Ehmann writes that "Emil P. (the translator could not read the last name and this is from a typed translation) who visited us last year with his wife is still alive, 76 years old and in good shape." My grandfather Hans Adolph must have known this Emil P. who was born ab. 1880.
[probably another grandson of #2 Adolf .. maybe these issues with be solved after receiving more information from Karl's genealogy. Which would be good, as this page is slowly starting to get a little bit 'unreadable']
