Welcome

.. to the new Wynkoop Genealogy pages, where almost everything is new. And, as usual with new things, there's still a lot to be done. This site was made using Netscape 4.5 & a text editor on a 1024*768 screen, and hasn't been tested on other browsers yet, so you may encounter some problems. Several links are still inactive, but I'm working on it.

There still is a plethora of information waiting to be uploaded. My site may have been inactive, but I kept receiving messages and other information. Everything landed with the rest, in boxes and drawers full of notes, or in a chaotic directory on an even more chaotic hard disk. In the coming months (years ..) I hope to be able to work through my entire archive and to digitize everything. So regularly there will be new stuff available here to read or just to look at. Would you like to be informed about the developments and updates, send me a mail and I'll put you on the mailing list.

Languages: everything on this site is available in both English and Dutch, except for the RWG3 section that will not be translated, as it hardly makes sense to present the American genealogy in Dutch, too. On the language field there are still some problems to be tackled:

Cooperation: I may be crazy but I'm no fool, and I am not going to do all the work on my own. I need your input and help to maintain these pages. Or even better: I would like you maintain parts of these pages yourself! It is my dream to built up a World Wide Wynkoop Web - WWWW ;-) - that, though existing of many different personal sites on different servers, looks like one single site to the visitor. In the RWG3 section you can see an example of how this would work. There, in the line 'jumpstation' you see two links to '1465'. The first version comes from my Luxembourg server, but the second labeled 'by Jim' comes straight from Jim's Pennsylvania server. Apart from the credit lines you can't see a difference. This way Jim can update all information on his branch of the family, and at the same time make his site be part of the WWWW.

The idea is that I (or someone else) provide the Wynkoop platform WWWW, and everyone who wants to use that platform for her or his Wynkoop Web information can do so. The only requirements will be on the fields of HTML, basic lay-out and of course the netiquette.

You will find more about this topic here. On another field and on a larger scale I am, together with with an experienced internet specialist, developping such a united site. And the first results are promising. The requirements on the technical field of HTML are pretty tight, in order to make things work exactly the way they should work. However, this doen't mean every participant will have to become a skilled programmer, as technical help will be provided in form of ready made pages. As to the requirements for the basic lay-out: we would have to agree on a style for the WWWW, for if everybody would just style their own pages the way she or he wants, as a result the united site would look pretty chaotic - and the visitors would not like it, nor get the maximum information out of our site. Talking about visitors:
Safety is an issue that is become more and more important on the internet. First, there is the point of mail addresses on web sites. Presented in the conventional way, with 'MAILTO:address@provider.com', they are an easy victim for spamspiders that will fill up your mail box to the limit, as soon as they got the chance. I am working on solving this problem.
Even more important is the fact that a genealogy site primarly presents private information on people. Just like most people, I guess, I don't mind at all that other Wynkoop genealogists (both absolute beginners and skilled veterans) can access informations about me, my snailmail address, private details and pictures, names of my direct relatives, etc.: after all, that is what this is all about. But there are many people out there whom I do not want to give access, as first these informations are non of their businessmatters and second I don't want them to abuse the data displayed here. So certain parts of this site must be protected. One solution would be to hide all information after 1900, as is often done on genealogical sites. But that would be totally contrary to our own goals. I haven't got an idea yet about how to solve this dilemma. May be there is someone among you who could give advice about the pro's and cons of password sites, cookie sites or other protective systems. I'd be very grateful for any help.

Anyway, for now: hope you enjoy the result of my work. I'd love feedback, and don't hesitate to be critical! As they say, 'spare the rod and spoil the child': in my opinion your motivated criticism can only make this site better. Thanks in advance and have fun surfing!
