In a
small village near Rotterdam, Kinderdijk is one of the few locations where one can admire
the method by which the Dutch fought so hard to keep their land free from being overcome
by water. 60% of the Netherlands is below sea level, and approximately 30% was
formerly covered by water and reclaimed by the Dutch using these types of
"pumping" systems and hard work.
In
Kinderdijk, there are 17 windmills still in functional condition. One of them has
been designated as a tourist attraction and daily visits are permitted during the summer
months.
